Why these 9 states
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wage or salary income. A paycheck in any of them is federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare only — no state withholding to calculate. New Hampshire's last state tax, on interest and dividends, ended January 1, 2025. Washington has no wage income tax, though it does tax certain large capital gains separately from payroll.
